PAST EVENTS![]() ![]() On FEB.24th, 2007 Ft.Worth hosted the World Class Annual Cowtown Marathon! Amateur Radio Operators and a host of other organizations showed up to staff the Cowtown Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, 10K, Adult 5K and Children's 5K events. The events staged out of Sundance Square, and some volunteers showed up as early as 0500 and continued to about 1600. Various length assignments were available.I was staged at Fluid Station #6 as were a group of local Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts. I took almost 100 photos at our corner and managed to capture a lot of the Marathon and Half Marathon runners as they passed through heading for the next station. ![]() Just click anywhere here and be taken to my new photo section. Hats off to Keith D.Pugh W5IU and all the crew for a great job cordinating all the radio operators.
On the following pages my goal has been to introduce both new and old ham operators to some of the most popular QRP projects, web sites and contest. Also there is information from the ARRL (Amateur Radio Relay League) and news about our ham friends around the world, some of who have paid the ultimate price for their love of country and service to their fellow mankind. I hope after you have checked out the site you have learned a bit about who ham operators are, what they do and encourage you to joining us if you are not a ham already.
For those intrested in bike ham mobiling or general cycling news My CYCLISTS related News has grown so much, I have added a special page on the site.
Also, you will find links to North Texas's ham radio clubs and operating frequencies. If you are interested in Amateur Radio Public Service and live in Tarrant County,

Everything is Turkey in Texas in November :).
The weather was as predicted, picture perfect at the START,it was 54F and climbed to
a pleasant 70 F at the FINISH abt noon, with light winds and partly cloudy skies!!
Could or would you want it any other way...naww. I was successful on my plan for "the
easy over once thank you" 35 miles ride which headed out north on Sherman Drive,
out of the Denton County Fair Grounds located at Carroll and University Drive. The hills in this part of the
ride out to Lake Ray Roberts will give you a good cardio I guarantee you. Then
you take in the view of the Lake as you head back southwest across the dam into a mild wind with the lake on your
right. The dam road is plenty wide on the edges so there's no need to worry about cars and trucks, giving you time to enjoy the
view. You soon see the the turn back for the 35 and go ahead and enjoy the rest stop
and notice your buns are telling you that you indeed have been keeping up with the DFers :).
One more rest stop 7 miles out from the finish is in a great location, the cookies and gatoraide
fuel you up for the remaining killer hills on Sherman Drive which take you back to the Fair Grounds in Denton.
It's great if you can find a DF to draft behind at this point to break the wind you are riding into.
It's not a bad wind but after nearly 35 miles the effect feels like it is a lot worse :) on several of the 20% elevated
long climbs.
![]() ![]() All in all, great rest stops, just enough good hills to give you a great work out and some good scenery, combined with average to good road surface add up to a pleasant ride. Even the autos were polite to the riders all along the route! Not once did I ever feel threatened by the passing cars even when we rode on the side of traffic going 70mph for a short stretch. 3 stars for this ride. Special thanks for the great SAG support by the local radio club W5NGU. ![]() Saturday Aug.20, Amateur Radio operators worked as part of the communication team in the B&B SAG SUV at the Red Hot Chili Pepper Bike event around Joe Pool Lake area near Dallas,Texas. There were 3 routes of 20,40 and 60 miles, the 40 and 60 mile riders got to ride across the old Dam where cars are prohibited, and if you have ever seen the bridge, you know why! I was very busy but managed to get a few shots at rest stop 2 so I will share those with you.
